The Daily Herald is a 148-year-old employee-owned news organization covering Chicago’s suburbs. These suburbs account for half the population of the Chicago metro area and have the vast majority of the region’s governmental entities, yet most of them rarely see a news reporter. We have about one-quarter of the news staff at our peak in 2008. That leaves inevitable coverage gaps across our geographic footprint of 75 towns, 96 school districts and six counties and court systems. It also makes for rich opportunities for enterprising reporters.
