Elvis Menayese

Elvis Menayese of Cardiff, Wales, reports on the issues of race and equity in Charlotte, North Carolina, for NPR affiliate WFAE. Before teaming up with the WFAE, Menayese became one of the first Knight Summer Fellows interns for the Queens University News Service. As a fellow, he reported on grassroots initiatives that engaged Charlotte-area university students to mobilize vaccinations for COVID-19 among populations with “vaccine hesitancy,” including groups with historic distrust for government programs. He earned his bachelor’s degree in English Literature and Multimedia Storytelling with a concentration in Journalism. During his time at Queens, he was awarded “The Spirit of Community” award by Queens Knight School in recognition of his journalism work done throughout the community of Charlotte. Before transferring to Queens, Menayese attended Stetson University and competed as a collegiate athlete for their men’s soccer program where he was named to the ASUN All-Freshman team recognizing superior play from freshman student-athletes. As a reporter, Menayese continues to devote his time to covering underrepresented communities within the Queen City.

A digital news publication, 100 Days in Appalachia has a mission to share the diverse stories of the 13 states that make up this region. Working with local voices to apply a cultural lens to what’s happening here, it shares what that means for the rest of the world.

Ashley Miznazi

Ashley Miznazi covers the Haitian community in the South Florida/Miami area for The Haitian Times, a news organization based in Brooklyn, New York. Previously, Miznazi was a multimedia fellow for The Texas Tribune, where she created short documentaries on Afghan resettlement and the foster care system. A graduate of The University of Texas at Austin, Miznazi worked in the photo and video departments at the student paper, The Daily Texan. She is the host of “Darkness,” a podcast about the 2018 Austin bombings.

North Carolina Health News

NC Health News launched in January 2012 in response to the disappearance of people to explain this complicated topic. Our reporters each take on multiple roles. Topics include children’s health and Medicaid, oral health, mental health, rural healthcare, environmental health issues and legislative health issues. We’ve been a “virtual” newsroom, with reporters spread across the state. We have a weekly phone-in via Google Hangout and there’s almost constant communication via phone, text, email, Slack, etc. However, we’re renting a physical office in the Triangle to better accommodate meetings and provide a hub for operations.

Mountain Times Publications

Mountain Times Publications is composed of five weekly newspapers serving three rural counties of western North Carolina. The main newsroom is based in Boone, N.C., home to Appalachian State University's 19,000 students. The staff includes seven reporters and three editors to cover 100 square miles of mountain communities, many of which rely on the printed newspaper because internet access is limited.

Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting

The Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting is a nonprofit, nonpartisan newsroom based in Louisville with coverage focused statewide. Our mission is to protect society’s most vulnerable citizens, expose wrongdoing in the public and private sectors, increase transparency in government and hold leaders accountable. KyCIR is the creation of the nonprofit Louisville Public Media, which announced KyCIR’s formation in spring 2013. We are a part of the WFPL newsroom, an NPR affiliate.

WFAE is the NPR station serving a 32-county listening area in the Charlotte region. La Noticia is a media company that produces the largest Spanish language newspaper in North Carolina. For over 22 years, we have been serving the growing Latino community in North Carolina with coverage of immigration, local and state government, politics, and community news and events. Our readers are immigrants from Latin America with a news source in their native language, providing them with the news and information they need to make informed decisions and help them adjust to the culture in the United States, in North Carolina, and in the cities they call home.
