The Nevada Independent

The Nevada Independent is a nonpartisan, nonprofit, statewide news and opinion website founded in 2017 by veteran political journalist and commentator Jon Ralston. Our team produces ethical, unbiased and transparent journalism focused on politics, policy, education, business and the environment. The Indy also produces events, podcasts, videos and Spanish-language content. All our content is paywall-free. We disclose our donors, and are supported by readers, grants, corporations and event sponsorships.

The Oklahoma Eagle

The Tulsa Local News Initiative (TLNI) is a nonprofit newsroom serving Tulsa with free, community-centered news. TLNI will launch a new newsroom and integrate the historic Oklahoma Eagle, transitioning it to a nonprofit, digital-first publication. This partnership expands The Eagle’s staff from one to four journalists and provides editorial and business support, ensuring the sustainability of one of the nation’s oldest Black newspapers, which has championed equity and African American advocacy for over 101 years.

The Press Democrat

The Press Democrat is the flagship of Sonoma Media Investments, a privately held news group serving Northern California’s Wine Country. It is the largest news organization between San Francisco and Portland, Oregon, providing breaking news and sophisticated enterprise around key issues including education, local politics, immigration, wildfires and children’s health and well-being. The Press Democrat won the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for coverage of the wildfires that killed 44 people and destroyed 6,000 homes.

Underscore Native News

Underscore Native News produces Indigenous-centered journalism that illuminates the intersections of sovereignty and justice and portrays the rich diversity of Native communities in the Pacific Northwest. We aim to produce thoughtful, revelatory stories that might otherwise go unreported and unheard, focusing exclusively on tribal communities and the issues that impact them. Through this work, we seek to forge a more equitable media ecosystem, strengthen democracy and improve diversity and representation in journalism.

VNN Oklahoma

Verified News Network (VNN) Oklahoma is a Native-owned newsroom dedicated to providing equitable news representation for Oklahoma's diverse population. Located on the Muscogee Nation Reservation, VNN Oklahoma unifies communities by disseminating verified information and filling knowledge gaps. Through collaboration with community partners and a commitment to grassroots journalism, VNN Oklahoma aims to nurture a healthy ecosystem of diverse perspectives and empower Indigenous communities.

Boyle Heights Beat

Boyle Heights Beat / Pulso de Boyle Heights is a nonprofit news organization serving Boyle Heights and the Eastside with bilingual, community-focused journalism. Founded in 2010 as a youth journalism program, it has evolved into a trusted news source publishing daily online, quarterly in print, and through a podcast and newsletter. Dedicated to “noticias por y para la comunidad,” or “news by and for the community,” BHB engages residents with information, resources, and stories that reflect their needs and amplify local voices.

Voice of San Diego

Voice of San Diego has been a pioneering investigative, nonprofit news organization since 2005. Our mission is to provide investigative journalism for a better San Diego. Our writers have the freedom and responsibility to tackle the biggest issues in the region. We believe San Diego is strong enough to face its most uncomfortable and intractable problems. But we also seek to educate, enlighten and entertain readers who care about San Diego's future and want an excellent and just government. Voice of San Diego has a unique approach to local journalism. We encourage conversational, engaging writing. We believe complexity is a form of elitism and that journalists are educators to help residents understand their communities, public policy discussions, plans and finances.

Cascadia Daily News, a three-year-old news startup, is a hyperlocal, fiercely independent digital/print publication covering Northwest Washington state from a newsroom in Bellingham, WA. CDN's 14 staffers lead the region between Seattle and Vancouver, B.C. in breaking news, enterprise and accountability journalism in a vibrant university city on the Salish Sea. Our collaborative team of seasoned and young journalists is consumer-focused and committed to mixing old traditions with new strategies to push local news forward.

Yakima Herald-Republic

The Yakima Herald-Republic, which publishes daily, is the largest media outlet in the Yakima Valley. It is dedicated to serving Central Washington with breaking news, sports and in-depth coverage. The newsroom also includes El Sol de Yakima, a Spanish-language website and weekly paper. The Herald-Republic is part of the family-owned Seattle Times company.

Daily Inter Lake

Published consistently since 1889, the Daily Inter Lake serves readers across the expansive Northwest Montana region through a robust print edition that is delivered six days a week and digital platforms that include timely news posts, and video and audio content. The newsroom prioritizes community journalism that helps local residents better understand their communities. The Daily Inter Lake was named the best daily newspaper in the state in 2024.
