100 Days in Appalachia is a nonprofit newsroom that exists to detail the complex ecosystem that makes up the Appalachian region by weaving beats, including culture, health, religion, politics, environment, and tech across generations. We’re here to amplify the region’s diverse voices, celebrate our successes, investigate our failures and empower our communities – and help other newsrooms do the same.

Beat: The New Rural Landscape

Position:

The New Rural Landscape explicitly and effectively covers the intersections of Tech, Environment and Poverty/Economic mobility through coverage of the impacts of data centers and economic exploitation via new tech in rural communities throughout the Appalachian region. The reporter will investigate the effects of modern industry in the Appalachian region across environmental, economic and other systemic impacts making up current dystopian landscape.

Salary and Benefits: $42,000

10 paid holidays, 24 days of paid vacation, and 12 days of paid sick leave per year, as well as stipends for work-from-home equipment and wellness. We will also provide any necessary tech or other equipment as needed.

Moving Stipend: While we prefer a corps member who has roots in the Appalachian region, we are open to offering a moving stipend if necessary. Stipend will be dependent on our budget and reporter's needs.
