Position:

A rural community at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains, a short drive from the nation’s capital, faces unprecedented threats to its character and scenic beauty. The reporter covers a cash-strapped county at a crossroads as rampant development from Northern Virginia, including giant data centers, threatens to encroach. Development brings promises of big tax revenues and jobs. But residents fear loss of farmland, environmental degradation, unquenchable energy demands and a worsening affordable housing crisis.

Salary and Benefits: $52,000 ($44,000 base salary; $8,000 rent subsidy, paid monthly)
