Beat: Youth sports culture
This beat involves coverage of the culture of youth sports in Detroit and Metro Detroit. While this beat has some ties to traditional prep-sports coverage, this reporter explores the role that sports play in bringing communities together and tells the narrative tales at the heart of sports programs, formal and informal, across the region. There are heroes in every one of these organizations, on and off the field, and we want to introduce them to Free Press readers. This journalist works with experienced editors and reporters on the Free Press' sports and metro desks in a beat that is part of the diet of sports readers as well as readers of "Detroit Is," a narrative-driven effort at the Free Press. They also work with innovative journalists to engage with readers in person and on social media.
