Salish Current

Salish Current is a six-year-old nonprofit, community-supported online publication providing Washington state readers in Whatcom, San Juan and Skagit Counties with daily, open-access local news, encouraging civil discourse, informed decisions and stronger sense of community. Our locally based reporting focuses on environment, justice and culture with intersections of health, education, transportation, economy, housing and culture, and local, state, federal and Indigenous governance. We report and edit according to Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics.

Position:

Living on the inhabited islands in our readership area is idyllic — and challenging. Our islands reporter understands the character and cultures making each community unique, and reports how challenges to island living, while magnified by isolation, serve as microcosms of issues elsewhere. These challenges, when met by local initiatives in housing, energy generation, sustainable food production, aging in place and other issues, can inspire solutions in the more populated, mainland parts of our region.

Salary and Benefits: $53,500

Staff benefits stipends include: $12,000 per year in lieu of health insurance; $50 per month for phone; $100 per month for utilities; $25 per year for home office; and $500 one-time toward computer purchase, if used for purposes other than Salish Current work; or use of a laptop computer purchased and owned by Salish Current, to be used exclusively for Salish Current work. Staff receive two weeks of paid time off in a calendar year and are paid for 10 holidays annually.
