Texas Public Radio

Texas Public Radio operates seven public radio stations, serving a wide swath of South Central Texas. Our aggregated service area consists of 22 counties covering 20,000 square miles. Two of our stations (KSTX, 24/7 news and information, and KPAC, 24/7 classical music) serve the San Antonio area. The other five stations provide service to the Hill Country, the Highland Lakes, Snyder, Del Rio and Gonzales. These are our Tex-Net stations.

MLK50: Justice Through Journalism

MLK50: Justice Through Journalism is an award-winning nonprofit digital newsroom, and focused on the intersection of poverty, power and policy. Its vision echoes Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream: a nation where all residents, especially workers, have enough resources to thrive, and where public and private policy supports their success.

The Kansas City Star

The Kansas City Star is the largest media organization covering the Kansas City region, which encompasses Kansas and Missouri. We cover both statehouses. The Star was founded in 1880 as "a paper for the people," a mission that continues today. We strive to tell stories that affect the lives of Kansas Citians and beyond.  

Daily Herald

The Daily Herald is a 149-year-old, employee-owned news organization, and the largest in suburban Chicago. These suburbs account for half the population of the Chicago metro area and have the vast majority of the region’s governmental entities. There are 75 towns, 96 school districts and six counties and court systems in this area, offering rich opportunities for enterprising reporters.

El Nuevo Herald

El Nuevo Herald is the second largest Spanish-language news outlet in the United States, covering local, national and international news for more than three decades, striving to be the most credible and dynamic source of news and information by producing journalism that makes a difference. El Nuevo Herald publishes in Spanish but also is routinely published in English in the Miami Herald. El Nuevo Herald shares a newsroom with the Miami Herald and they collaborate on a daily basis. Occasionally, the newspaper also collaborates with WLRN, an NPR affiliate that operates out of our newsroom. The newspaper’s coverage area extends well beyond the local community, reaching an audience of more than 357,000 in print and 3.9 million online. El Nuevo Herald’s digital readers stretch across South Florida, the Caribbean and Latin America.

The Mendocino Voice

The Mendocino Voice, founded in 2016, is an online, independent, worker owned, general interest news service with an emphasis on breaking news, government reporting, and community events. We publish multiple times daily on our website and across social platforms. Rural Mendocino County, in northern California, has become a news desert, and our goal is to go beyond merely restoring the old status quo, by providing coverage to communities that were left out even before the collapse of the news industry. We are transitioning to a worker-reader co-op with funding from Facebook Community Journalism Project/Lenfest Institute.

Searchlight New Mexico

Searchlight New Mexico is a nonprofit investigative news organization that specializes in social justice issues. Our mission is to focus high-impact journalism on topics of local, regional and national interest in order to allow the public to see into the remote recesses of government and to expose abuses of power. We launched in January 2018 with a mandate to cover child and family well-being in New Mexico, which is by all measures - child poverty, child abuse, education, parental incarceration rates, drug and alcohol abuse - the worst place in America to grow up. We write deeply reported, narrative stories that address intractable problems and in just 18 months we have won major state and national journalism awards. More importantly, our work has triggered legislative proposals, major policy changes, and a statewide commitment (led by the new governor) to child well-being.

F. Amanda Tugade

F. Amanda Tugade reports for MLK50: Justice Through Journalism, which is based in Memphis, Tennessee. She focuses on poverty, power and public policy in Memphis and Shelby County. Previously, Tugade has covered Chicago and its surrounding suburbs. She has primarily worked as a reporter for local media outlets, including Shaw Media, the former 22nd Century Media and the Chicago Tribune/Pioneer Press newspapers. Her stories have also been featured in the Chicago Reader, Chicago Magazine, the Chicago Defender. She has won awards from the Northern Illinois Newspaper Association and the Illinois Press Association for her in-depth profiles of community leaders. Recently, Tugade was named a 2019 Peter Lisagor Award finalist. She’s a graduate of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

KERA / The Texas Newsroom

NPR and Texas public radio stations collaborated to form the Texas News Hub. It’s the first step in a systemwide collaborative project to create a nationwide virtual public radio newsroom of 1,000-plus journalists. The collaboration includes two daily, hour-long statewide programs (Texas Standard and Think) and will soon include six daily statewide newscasts, and a statewide digital news desk. The Hub is working to hire and train freelance and small station reporters to provide news service to underserved communities in the state’s news deserts.
