Houston Defender Network
The Houston Defender was founded in October 1930 and serves the Houston area which includes Harris, Fort Bend and Brazoria counties. As Houston's leading Black information source, the Defender continues to provide the community with news, sports, lifestyle, business, politics and more.
The Charlotte Post
The Charlotte Post Publishing Company is been the mirror to the African-American community in North Carolina's two largest media markets. The company's roots are in the AME Zion Church, where The Messenger was launched in 1878 to provide a faith-based forum for newly emancipated Black people during the Reconstruction period. It is the leading source of news and information in Charlotte's Black community, which makes up about one-third of Mecklenburg County's 1.1 million population. Its sister publication, The Triangle Tribune, was founded in 1998 and is similarly situation in the Raleigh-Durham market, which exceeds 1 million people. The 16-member staff consists of three full-time journalists and three freelance photographers and journalists.
Idaho Statesman
The Idaho Statesman has been the Treasure Valley's news source for 156 years. Our core mission hasn't changed much over the years: provide local, essential reporting that informs our readers about what is happening in the world around them. We aim to arm policy makers and community members alike with exclusive, fact-based reporting, data, context and analysis that allows them to make better decisions for their families and our community. Our coverage area is now made up of Ada and Canyon counties, which includes the Boise city limits, but it used to include four other counties with regularity.
The Colorado Sun
The Colorado Sun was founded in September 2018 as a journalist-owned, reader-supported, nonpartisan news organization dedicated to producing in-depth coverage that sheds light on important places, policies and people in Colorado. We emphasize coverage of issues and places that often don't get as much attention from others. Our mission is to produce statewide coverage for Colorado's 5.8 million people. The Sun is a Public Benefit Corporation that always puts service first.
IndyStar
The IndyStar’s mission is to expose what's right and wrong, to shine a spotlight on the unique and special people and places that make Indy special and to look for solutions. With a newsroom staff of about 80, we are the largest news organization in the state and work with roughly 10 other sites as part of our Network including Bloomington, South Bend, Evansville, Henderson and Richmond and Lafayette. The IndyStar is the third largest news organization within USA Today Network not including USA Today.
Commercial Appeal
The Commercial Appeal is 179 years old and has been a pillar of the Mid-South Region. It is based in Memphis, which sits at the nexus of east Arkansas, north Mississippi and West Tennessee, and has long been known as a regional newspaper. It’s focused on Shelby County, Tennessee and DeSoto County, Mississippi. Blacks represent 52 percent of Shelby County’s residents. The newsroom has 27 full-time staffers and two part-time staffers. Four staffers are editors who supervise other staffers.
Kansas City PBS
Kansas City PBS has a long tradition of public service that has laid the foundation for expanding its news gathering relationship with our community. Our content platforms — television, radio, digital, social media and educational outreach — exist to serve the diversity of our region. We explore complicated issues with thoughtful reporting. We share the diverse stories of people, places, and progress in our community. We advance conversations through community engagement and social media. Specifically, Kansas City PBS operates four KCPT-related public television channels; KTBG 90.9 The Bridge, an NPR-affiliated AAA music station; and FlatlandKC, an online digital magazine; in addition to social media and community events.
Northern Public Radio – WNIJ
The mission of Northern Public Radio is to enrich, inspire and inform adults in northern Illinois through programs and services that share ideas, encourage thought, give pleasure and create community. We are a member station for National Public Radio (NPR) and create opportunities throughout the year to work with reporters at all stages of their careers. The challenge and opportunity of our reach is the large geographic area we serve; from the rolling hills of northwestern Illinois as far as the Mississippi River, north to the southern Wisconsin border, south to the beauty of the Illinois Valley and Starved Rock state park near LaSalle, with an urban center of Rockford and the educational hub of Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. The urban/rural divide allows us to provide perspectives of scope, scale, and context to how issues affect our listeners in these different landscapes that is not replicated by TV and newspapers given their smaller geographic reach.
Rita Oceguera
Rita Oceguera covers communities that ring Chicago, including Aurora, Cicero, Elgin, Joliet and Waukegan, for Injustice Watch. She earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Northwestern University, where she studied social justice and investigative reporting and focused on a range of Latino issues. During her internship at The Bubble in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Oceguera dove deep into the inequalities that women face as soccer players and sharpened her skills as a video editor. She then worked with The Chicago Reporter to examine the spread of business vacancies in Chicago and analyzed a prosperous Latino neighborhood. Her partnership with The Chicago Reporter led her into an investigation of the complexities that low income students face when applying to colleges. Originally from Aurora, Oceguera now lives in Chicago with her fiancé, her pet axolotl (a.k.a. a Mexican walking fish) and an abundance of plants.
