We fulfill that mission by publishing stories daily online and biweekly in print, covering news from antisemitic incidents to relevant legislation to cultural happenings.

Mission Local

Mission Local is a non-profit newsroom rooted in our mission: ground-up reporting that is free for all and produced by reporters and editors who reflect the city's diversity. Our street reporting model often leads to investigative pieces impacting everyone in the city.

San Francisco Public Press

Founded in 2009, the San Francisco Public Press is a nonprofit, noncommercial news organization publishing and broadcasting independent public-interest journalism about under-covered topics, focusing on under-served audiences. We offer local investigative and solutions reporting at sfpublicpress.org and via “Civic,” a public affairs podcast also airing on KSFP 102.5 FM, our low-power community radio station. Coverage includes homelessness, housing affordability, public health, sea level rise, environmental equity, transportation safety, digital privacy, immigration and elections.

The Visalia Times Delta

The Visalia Times-Delta, where this reporter is based, is owned by Gannett. The California News Desert Initiative aims to promote content sharing among newsrooms so residents in under-covered communities get the news they need.

The Mendocino Voice

The Mendocino Voice, founded in 2016, is an online, independent, worker owned, general interest news service with an emphasis on breaking news, government reporting, and community events. We publish multiple times daily on our website and across social platforms. Rural Mendocino County, in northern California, has become a news desert, and our goal is to go beyond merely restoring the old status quo, by providing coverage to communities that were left out even before the collapse of the news industry. We are transitioning to a worker-reader co-op with funding from Facebook Community Journalism Project/Lenfest Institute.

San José Spotlight

San José Spotlight is the city’s first nonprofit digital news organization dedicated to independent political and business reporting. It is relentless and unapologetic about its mission to provide public service journalism that ignites civic engagement, educates citizens and strengthens our democracy.

CALmatters is a nonpartisan, nonprofit journalism venture committed to explaining how California’s state Capitol works and why it matters. Environmental regulation, education, health care, criminal justice, economic inequality — the debates on these issues and others have a profound impact on the lives of 38 million Californians and beyond. Our team of experienced journalists, with the time and resources to dig deep, is committed to meaningfully informing Californians about the players, politics, and interests that shape the issues that affect their lives.
