You’ve accomplished a lot in your long career—and now what? Maybe you dream of going back to your roots: signing on with a local newsroom to bring all your experience to bear reporting on an important subject, long under-covered. Perhaps you are interested in doing some editing and mentoring, too, to help emerging journalists grow and thrive.
In short, if you’re as or more passionate today about journalism as you were when you started—if, like us, you believe local journalism is key to preserving democracy itself—our new pilot is for you.
We’re taking applications now to build an “experienced” corps—journalists with eight or more years on the job interested in working in one of the host newsrooms and beats below. In some cases, the focus will be on your own reporting and mentoring young journalists. In other cases, you may be helping to edit.
We’re offering this program in response to what we’ve been hearing from newsrooms throughout the country. That is, there’s a crying need for more seasoned reporters and editors in organizations everywhere.
For host newsrooms we pair with a mid- to late-career journalist, Report for America pays half the salary up to $30,000. (Newsrooms can pay more, but our cap is $30,000.) For early-career reporters, our cap is $25,000.
For a list of newsrooms interested in interviewing mid- to late-career journalists, see below. For more details, go to our interactive chart here and under skills, select “all experience levels.”
Apply here by Jan. 31.
