News desert? Check. The weekly News is the lone legitimate mainstream print/online outlet. The Rappahannock News has served the 7,300 residents of rural Rappahannock County, Va., since 1949. Its parent company is owned by a group of community investors.

The Maine Monitor

The Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting is an independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan news organization located in Augusta, Maine. It was founded in 2009 by veteran journalists John Christie and Naomi Schallit to help offset some of the deeper journalism that was quickly evaporating as Maine newspapers slashed staffs. The news organization produces investigative and enterprise journalism on politics, healthcare, the environment and education, and publishes Pine Tree Watch.

VTDigger.org

VTDigger is a nonprofit daily news organization dedicated to watchdog reporting on Vermont institutions, businesses and government. Its mission is to produce rigorous journalism that explains issues, holds government officials and entities accountable and engages Vermonters in democratic processes. The staff produces in-depth stories on health care, politics, business, criminal justice, the environment and education.  

The Kansas City Beacon

The Kansas City Beacon is a non-profit online news outlet focused on in-depth journalism in the public interest. It launched in March 2020 and is part of The Beacon, a regional nonprofit news network serving Kansas and Missouri. Beacon stories are revelatory, contextual, data-driven and solutions-driven. Our reporting centers around issues in healthcare, education, economics, environment and civic engagement.

The Kansas City Beacon

The Kansas City Beacon is a nonprofit, digital-only news outlet based in covering the 2 million metro area and both sides of the state line (Kansas and Missouri). Our mission: To spur reforms in the public interest by shining light on wrongdoings and abuse by government, businesses and other institutions in the region through in-depth, solutions-driven journalism. The Beacon was founded in April 2019 and began publishing in early 2020.

WYSO Public Radio

WYSO is the only National Public Radio affiliate station in the Dayton, Ohio, area. The station also does local and state news along with public affairs programming and news specials. WYSO station began broadcasting in 1958 as a student-run station on the campus of Antioch College. Today, it belongs to the community, with oversight from a seven-member board of directors comprised of community leaders. It reaches 14 counties in southwest Ohio.

Cincinnati.com / The Enquirer

Founded in 1841, The Enquirer publishes primarily via the Cincinnati.com website, the Cincinnati.com app and a daily newspaper. Winner of the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for local reporting, The Enquirer is part of the Gannett-owned USA Today network. The local news site covers seven counties in the Greater Cincinnati region, maintains a two-person bureau in the statehouse bureau and serves as a primary source for investigative and watchdog journalism in the region.

The Wichita Beacon is a nonprofit, digital-only news outlet based Wichita, Kansas, launching in Summer 2021. Our mission: To spur reforms in the public interest by shining light on wrongdoings and abuse by government, businesses and other institutions in the region through in-depth, solutions-driven journalism. The Beacon’s sister newsroom in Kansas City was founded in April 2019 and began publishing in early 2020.

Block Club Chicago

Block Club Chicago is a nonprofit, nonpartisan news organization dedicated to covering Chicago’s neighborhoods. The news organization’s mission is to cover the city through a truly block-level lens that encourages people to get involved at a local level—whether that’s through campaigning for a local school council seat or trying a family-owned restaurant instead of a chain. Block Clubs seeks to build community through ground-level reporting of the city’s neighborhoods.
