KCAW

KCAW serves Sitka and seven other communities, from Yakutat to Port Alexander — roughly the same distance between Washington, DC, and Columbus, Ohio. However, for those communities outside of Sitka, there is no other media source, and limited and unreliable internet. KCAW is the sole source of information about everything: from weather and tsunami warnings, to presidential elections.  

Herald and News (Klamath Falls)

The Herald and News is the major local journalistic news source in our region as it is the only daily newspaper in three of the four rural counties we cover in southern Oregon and northern California. The H&N, which got its start in 1906 when it was known as the Evening Herald, is a five-day a week print and online newspaper, with a strong social media presence, that also produces quarterly regional lifestyles magazines, as well as other special feature tabs.  

City Limits News

City Limits is an award-winning, non-profit news agency that uses investigative journalism through the prism of New York City to identify urban problems, examine their causes, explore solutions, and equip communities to take action. For more than 40 years, we have covered key urban issues such as housing and development, education, government, immigration, the environment, criminal justice and the economy with award-winning investigative journalism.

Albuquerque Journal

The Associated Press is a global news agency that began 172 years ago as a cooperative of five New York City newspapers. With 263 locations in more than 100 countries, AP provides journalism to roughly 15,000 media outlets around the world. AP sets standards for ethics and excellence, and has won 52 Pulitzer Prizes, including the 2016 gold medal for Public Service for an investigation into labor abuses in the seafood industry, reports that freed more than 2,000 slaves. AP’s seven news bureaus in the northeast U.S. provide vital local and regional news to 378 newsrooms.

The Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting

About the News Organization: The Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting is an independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan news organization located in Augusta, Maine. It was founded in 2009 by veteran journalists John Christie and Naomi Schallit to help offset some of the deeper journalism that was quickly evaporating as Maine newspapers slashed staffs. The news organization produces investigative and enterprise journalism on politics, healthcare, the environment and education, and publishes Pine Tree Watch. About the Position: This Report for America corps member covers state politics and education throughout Maine. For state politics, the reporter develops a statehouse beat for the Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting. This includes day-to-day coverage of important issues in Augusta, as well as a year-long enterprise series looking at divisiveness in Maine, in particular, how the state transitions from eight years of leadership under Gov. Paul LePage. Education is a different beat, focused on scouring the state and examining how education leadership failures are impacting individual towns and schools. This beat also has a data focus, examining why Maine is below national averages in reading and mathematics. There is a large opportunity for a year-long investigative project looking at the state of a failed education system.

KUER: NPR Utah

KUER is Utah’s largest NPR affiliate, reaching 165,000 listeners each week from St. George to Pocatello, Idaho. KUER/NPR Utah, licensed through the University of Utah, employs 28 full-time staff including a news director, politics/government editor, a web producer, five reporters, a news/production assistant and two hosts. The mission of KUER News is to provide reporting in the public interest with a developing bent toward investigative, watchdog journalism. KUER produces newscasts during Morning Edition and All Things Considered with midday newscast at noon.

WCAI: The Cape and Islands NPR Station

WCAI is the local NPR affiliate serving Cape Cod, the South Coast, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. WCAI is dedicated to reflecting the unique character of the region and providing first-rate journalism. A small newsroom producing award-winning radio, WCAI reaches from the industrial legacy cities of New Bedford and Fall River, to the artist-and-LGBTQ mecca of Provincetown, to the working-class neighborhoods of the mid-Cape, to the agricultural resurgence of the near-shore island of Martha’s Vineyard, to the remote villages of Nantucket, 26 miles out to sea. WCAI is grounded in stories of science and the environment, drawing on the intellectual wealth of being home to research laboratories of world-class marine and environmental science institutions. It is the only public media service solely dedicated to covering this broad and diverse region. Closed Position: This Report for America corps member works for WCAI as an environmental reporter, focusing on stories about how climate change affects people in the region. Cape Cod is at forefront of some of the most hopeful efforts to combat climate change and reshape the forces contributing to it. The science critical to understanding the changing atmosphere is happening in laboratories in Woods Hole. Additionally, scientists from these laboratories are part of grass-roots level conversations about how we should respond to the environmental crisis. We are also home to the imminent launch of the nation’s largest offshore wind farm, just south of Martha’s Vineyard, which promises a new era in renewable energy. There are important, people-driven stories of innovation and adaptation to be told. WCAI’s science program host, Dr. Heather Goldstone, serves as a mentor for the environmental reporter, having covered this region and topic for years.

The Buffalo Bulletin

The Buffalo Bulletin is a weekly print and online newspaper that has served Johnson County, Wyoming since 1884. The newspaper of record, we are family-owned and publish local news exclusively. Each week, The Bulletin publishes news that affects its community members, including coverage of local governing boards, school events, prep sports, economics, industry and politics as well as a weekly editorial and other commentary on their opinion page. The Buffalo Bulletin is the definitive source for news and information in Johnson County.
