The News & Observer

The News & Observer’s roots go back to 1865, when its predecessor The Sentinel was launched to expose corruption in the Reconstruction era. Among the News & Observer’s many awards are three Pulitzer Prizes, including the 1996 gold medal for public service. The News & Observer is the paper of record in the capital city of North Carolina, covering the statehouse, the legislature and its impact on the lives of all North Carolinians. The newspaper’s mission is to produce fearless and independent public service journalism that gives a voice to underrepresented, unheard groups and communities.

WYSO Public Radio

Our role, beyond serving as the NPR affiliate for our region, is to share voices that are often excluded or marginalized in other outlets. To cite a few examples, we share the stories of families impacted by the opioid crisis; interviews with elderly African-American residents of Dayton’s west side who have chosen to age in place in their homes; and in-studio performances local musicians. Our FM signal reaches 12 counties in southwest Ohio. To the south we serve the growing area between Dayton and Cincinnati; to the north, Sidney, Ohio; to the west, Richmond, Indiana; and to the east the outskirts of Columbus. Our coverage area includes urban, rural and small towns.

The Wichita Eagle

The Wichita Eagle was founded in 1872 and is the dominant news organization in south-central Kansas. The Eagle was at the forefront of the civic journalism movement and is known for the skills and experience it provides reporters looking to work at large news organizations.  

VTDigger.org

VTDigger is a daily news organization dedicated to watchdog reporting on Vermont institutions, businesses and government. Its mission is to produce rigorous journalism that explains issues, holds government accountable and engages Vermonters in the democratic process. “Every day we work to expose the truth, cut through the noise of echo chamber spin and review the actions of public officials,” according to its mission statement.  

The Spectrum

The Spectrum is a digital and daily print newsroom based in southwestern Utah and is the lone remaining daily print publication between Las Vegas and Salt Lake City. We are a general news organization, with an emphasis on watchdog, government and environmental issues. We cover all of Washington County’s 17 municipalities and unincorporated areas, along with smaller communities and public lands spanning 25,000 square miles across parts of Utah, Arizona and Nevada.  

The Kansas City Beacon

The Beacon is a new nonprofit, digital only news outlet based in Kansas City, covering the two million-person metro and both sides of the state line (Kansas and Missouri). Our mission: To spur reforms in the public interest by shining light on wrongdoings and abuse by government, businesses and other institutions in the region through in-depth, solutions-driven journalism. The Beacon was founded in April 2019 and will begin publishing in early 2020.

Spectrum News 1

Our core mission is to strengthen our community and our democracy by providing essential local content. We provide actionable insights to our viewers, allowing them to not only plan for their days with accurate weather and traffic news, but also to become more engaged community members. We strive to tell the local stories that our viewers will not hear about otherwise from the California State Capitol all the way to neighborhood associations. Spectrum News 1 reaches more than 1.2 million video subscribers in Southern California, providing them with accurate, accessible, and fair news coverage all hours of the day. Our hyperlocal content strategy combined with an original storytelling approach makes Spectrum News 1 unique in the Southern Californian news landscape.

The Maine Monitor

The Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting is an independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan news organization located in Augusta, Maine. It was founded in 2009 by veteran journalists John Christie and Naomi Schallit to help offset some of the deeper journalism that was quickly evaporating as Maine newspapers slashed staffs. The news organization produces investigative and enterprise journalism on politics, healthcare, the environment and education, and publishes Pine Tree Watch.

The Mendocino Voice

The Mendocino Voice, founded in 2016, is an online, independent, worker owned, general interest news service with an emphasis on breaking news, government reporting, and community events. We publish multiple times daily on our website and across social platforms. Rural Mendocino County, in northern California, has become a news desert, and our goal is to go beyond merely restoring the old status quo, by providing coverage to communities that were left out even before the collapse of the news industry. We are transitioning to a worker-reader co-op with funding from Facebook Community Journalism Project/Lenfest Institute.

Kansas City PBS

Kansas City PBS has a long tradition of public service that has laid the foundation for expanding its news gathering relationship with our community. Our content platforms — television, radio, digital, social media and educational outreach — exist to serve the diversity of our region. We explore complicated issues with thoughtful reporting. We share the diverse stories of people, places, and progress in our community. We advance conversations through community engagement and social media. Specifically, Kansas City PBS operates four KCPT-related public television channels; KTBG 90.9 The Bridge, an NPR-affiliated AAA music station; and FlatlandKC, an online digital magazine; in addition to social media and community events.
