The Reader – El Perico

The Reader (parent company Pioneer Publishing) is the original alternative news monthly in Omaha, NE, founded in 1994. It is known for its watchdog journalism and covering news the mainstream media misses. The print paper has citywide distribution and a robust digital site. With an exceptionally diverse audience, its readers are most defined by their high levels of engagement in the community (from voting to going out). El Perico is the original bilingual community weekly founded in 1999, serving Omahaís booming Latino community, becoming part of Pioneer Publishing in 2004 and going monthly in 2020.

Democrat & Chronicle

The Democrat and Chronicle is an online and print local news organization primarily serving the Rochester, New York Metro area of nearly 1 million people. We serve as the hub of the USA Today Network's Northeast Crescent Region, which stretches from Vermont to Virginia. We regularly collaborate and share best practices with other local news sites within the Network, as well as with USA Today itself. The Democrat and Chronicle and its predecessor newspapers, first launched in 1833, uphold a proud tradition of community journalism in a city where both the nation's abolitionist and suffragist movements took center stage in the 19th century.

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is the product of the 1995 merger of the Milwaukee Journal and Milwaukee Sentinel, newspapers that date to 1882 and 1837 respectively. After two transitions, we are part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, which includes 10 other newsrooms in Wisconsin and 109 newsrooms nationwide —a number that will grow with the Gannett-GateHouse merger. While we regularly do stories with national interest and impact, our focus is fiercely local. We cover Milwaukee, southeastern Wisconsin and the state like no one else does – or can. We are most proud of the day-to-day reporting that chronicles our community, informs our residents and holds officials accountable for what they do. We expose wrongdoing. We highlight programs that work. We engage the community. We help lead the search for solutions.

Mission Local

With more than ten years of experience, Mission Local is more than a neighborhood news site. We are a local news site that covers city-wide issues from the ground up. We are digital-first, led by a Latina and focused on producing trustworthy journalism. There are no shortcuts to the latter. We don’t aggregate. We make phone calls, read documents, pound the pavement, attend meetings. We talk to people on the street.

WITF

WITF is a public media organization, based in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. We have a history of serving a 19-county region (nearly one-third of the state’s population) that dates back more than 50 years. We have been a leader in establishing collaborative projects and content verticals with other Pennsylvania public media organizations. WITF is a multimedia organization that delivers content to our regional audience online and on-air through our radio and television stations and website. The station’s content verticals include PA Post, Transforming Health and StateImpact Pennsylvania.  

El Nuevo Herald

El Nuevo Herald is the second largest Spanish-language news outlet in the United States, covering local, national and international news for more than three decades, striving to be the most credible and dynamic source of news and information by producing journalism that makes a difference. El Nuevo Herald publishes in Spanish but also is routinely published in English in the Miami Herald. El Nuevo Herald shares a newsroom with the Miami Herald and they collaborate on a daily basis. Occasionally, the newspaper also collaborates with WLRN, an NPR affiliate that operates out of our newsroom. The newspaper’s coverage area extends well beyond the local community, reaching an audience of more than 357,000 in print and 3.9 million online. El Nuevo Herald’s digital readers stretch across South Florida, the Caribbean and Latin America.

The Sacramento Bee

The Sacramento Bee is the only daily newspaper covering California’s capital city. At 161 years old, the news organization is McClatchy’s flagship. The newspaper’s coverage area extends along the I-80 corridor from Lake Tahoe to the East and up to but not necessarily including the Bay Area. The newspaper covers northern California regularly as well as Stockton. In Sacramento, readers expect The Sacramento Bee to hold elected officials at the statehouse to account, and they rely on the newspaper for deep environmental coverage in addition to local government and growth.

Connecticut Public

Our organization was established in 1962 as the Connecticut Educational Television Station, broadcast on station WEDH from the basement of Trinity College Library in Hartford. CPTV was created in 1974 when WEDH formed a network with three other television stations in the state. CT Public Radio signed on in June 1978, and that year joined CPTV to form Connecticut Public Broadcasting, Inc. For many years, the station aired primarily classical music in between Morning Edition and All Things Considered. It changed to an all-news and information format in 2006. Now, we produce 10-12 daily radio newscasts, four call-in talk shows, and one weekly news magazine show and podcast. In addition to statewide distribution through CT Public platforms, our reporting is shared regionally through the New England News Collaborative (a network of eight public media newsrooms covering the six New England states) and nationally through NPR.

Centro de Periodismo Investigativo

Founded in 2007, the Centro de Periodismo Investigativo (CPI) is an independent, non-profit organization promoting news and information access in Puerto Rico through investigative journalism, litigation and journalism training. The CPI is the only entity of its kind in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean dedicated to investigative journalism. Our journalists have produced hundreds of stories on issues such as political corruption, the financing of electoral campaigns, public policy issues in areas such as health, the economy, the environment, education, agriculture and crime, as well as the ways in which private groups benefit from government mismanagement. Published in both Spanish and English, CPI’s work has received more than 30 awards from professional journalism associations in Puerto Rico and abroad.
